Understanding Piano Progression: A Guide for Parents

Introduction

As parents, understanding your child’s piano progression can be crucial to supporting their musical journey. At Pinner Music Academy, we follow a structured approach to piano education, beginning with foundational studies in the Piano Safari method before advancing to graded exams. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate your child's musical development.

Pre-Grade Studies

Pre-Grade Studies: Piano Safari Levels

  • Level 1: This foundational level is designed to establish basic piano techniques and musicality. Typically, students spend 1 - 2 months on each unit. On average, children take one year to complete Level 1. However, the duration can vary; younger students might take up to two years, while older or more diligent students may finish in six months. [1]

  • Level 2: After completing Level 1, students move to Level 2, spending 6-8 weeks on each unit. Similar to Level 1, this stage usually takes about a year to complete, depending on the child's age and practice habits. [2]

Developing Key Skills

  • Hand Shape: Takes about a year with consistent practice. [3]

  • Confident Sight-Readers: Usually achieved within three years for children starting at ages 5 or 6. [4]

ABRSM Graded Exams

After completing the initial levels, students progress through the ABRSM graded exams. Here’s a general timeline for progression:

  • Grade 1-5: 12-18 months each [5]

  • Grade 5-8: 18-24 months each [5]

These time-frames are approximate and can vary based on individual commitment and practice habits.
